selling blythe dolls! help?

i know some of you are into blythe. i have two dolls i am looking to sell, as i have way too many hobbies. they are being neglected.

they don't have boxes, but they do have all their clothes/accessories. i have never used them or really had a chance to play with them at all. they merely sat on the shelf for a couple years.

one is a "groovy groove", and the other is a "tweedly do".

where do you think is the best place to sell these, and about how much should one ask for one, if it's w/o a box? is ebay good? or are there other good places?

it's been a good run.

i've been a livejournal user for hmm, four years? it's been a good run, but i'm feeling like i want to move on to bigger and better things!

i'm feeling a gray and beige thing happening.

i'm obsessed with this pair of chie mihara heels! i lovingly blame my friends and chie fans, purldrop and jill of fifty5X3 who keep gushing over her gorgeous zapatos:

grey and beige/tan are amazing with brights, especially tan + kelly green and orange, and grey with bright purple and bright blue. i'm imagining a tan sweater and skirt with bright green or orange shoes, or a special bright orange dress with tan shoes, that sort of thing. like, a pop of neutral with the brights, or a pop of brights with the neutral. this is also a way to ease into the more washed out color palettes of seasons to come, especially for a color addict like me. something about the interplay of rich neutrals and brights in a cute, and modern way really appeals to me.

project runway 3 started this week. as with the past two seasons, i'm taking it with a grain of salt. i feel like a have a slightly different view of it, having been around/worked/studied in the industry, but it's still entertaining nonetheless.

been keeping busy the last few days:

wednesday and thursday, i went to a couple fabric exhibitions here in NYC, on behalf of a good pal from parsons and a client of hers. those exhibitions would be the turkish fashion fabric exhibition, and premier vision: european preview, respectfully. vendors representing major fabric mills have tons of samples for perusal and one goes around and flicks through the swatches, and then places orders for chosen swatches to be mailed to oneself. like what you see once you get the swatches? order hundreds of yards/meters of it, and have your clothes manufactured from it. two giant rooms of fabric that are available for collections that are to be delivered for fall/winter 2007-2008 (that's a full year ahead). displays of colors for said season (an abundance of muted tones and shades...the only brights they showed on the big color trend display were rich reds, burgundies, and red-oranges). big displays of fabric trends and color trends, together. extremely enlightening, a good experience.

it tickles me that my ID said i was "head designer" of my own company, if only for a day (or two). IF ONLY i was able to afford to start something up right now. but it's not the right time (mostly because i lack experience, capital, and by extention, any sort of investors/investments or the potential for such, at this current juncture).

goofing off with mad ruffles and insane headgear/hairstyles, yo. just having a little fun and keeping my drawing mojo activated.

when i think of designs, i think collections. it's part of my schooling, definitely. a drawing/design inspires the next one, and so on. play with details, try this, try that, try it all. dump it all out before you forget it or lose it. out of all that, something amazing may arise. i feel it is
akin to the photographer's penchant for shooting rolls and rolls of film or filling memory cards with shots: more to choose from, more chance for the one shot that's *just right*.

oversized sweater dress i finished last night.

top down construction. raglan sleeve increases based on glampyre's "minisweater", and the rest was my own idea. made of "galway" 100% wool yarn, and done completely in the round (body and sleeves). took me the better part of 2.5-3 weeks to complete. MILES of stockinette. LOOK at the WIDE skirt.

glad to be done, because my wrists/hands feel like they are going to fall off. i'm taking a break from knitting for several days, if not a week or more, lest i injure myself irreparably.

good thing: it's inspired me to do some other things, variations on top down/in the round construction, once i'm rested and have taken a holiday from knitting for a bit. if you haven't knitted from the top down/in the round, YOU SHOULD. i think it's one of the most malleable, flexible, creative ways to knit. you make it up as you go along. not saying other ways of knitting are bad, i just think this one is so intuitive and actually, really easy. i'm still exploring the possibilities, in my mind, and in actual, factual yarn.

i scanned in some interesting pages from my most recent fashion scrapbook, pages i love and find inspiring.

i pilfer american, british, and japanese fashion, interior design, and art magazines, and i glue in things that strike my fancy. sometimes it's something i love unequivocally, sometimes i fancy something about the design, like the cut, color, texture: how someone uses their materials in an innovative way. sometimes it's about styling: a neat way someone put clothes together, that's particularly interesting. it can and is anything that makes my eyes smile and tickles my fashion bone.

clearly: i favor the colorful, the quirky, the twee.

i clip and paste in clever street fashion shots whenever i find them. of course, japanese mags are great for this, but street fashion spreads, i have found, can also be spotted in titles like "teen vogue", "WWD Fast" and "nylon", for starters.

i also paste in DIY articles, when i find them, and information about new and upcoming designers, artists, etc.

i try to completely fill a page, if at all possible.

i've been keeping collages/sketchbooks full of clippings like this since high school, so hmmm, that's about 16+ years.

restyled this dress yesterday:

i found this fabulous vintage mexican dress at the flea market on ave A & 11th street on saturday, when peter and i were bumming around the city and long island with our friends aaron and nicole. cost me $10. it was floor length, and anything that long looks awful on me, so i chopped out a 1 foot section toward the bottom 1/3 of the dress, and then reattached the hem, and then put in about 5 rows of decorative topstitching toward the top of the reattached hem. i used the scrap fabric to make a belt. the belt buckle is from britex fabrics in san francisco. i bought it when we were out there last month, and had no idea what i would use it for....so it's nice that i've found a use for it.

i really love how the dress turned out, actually...it's a cute length for me now, and the cinching belt is really necessary for my particular topography + i think it gives the dress a cute 50s sort of feel. this mexican dress is different than many i've seen: it's made of thicker, nicer fabric, and the embroidery looks really intricate. the sleeves are even joined with crochet! very neat. i even think it would look quite nice in the winter with thick woolen tights, a soft cashmere turtleneck, and vintage boots, like this favorite pair of mine, thrifted this past winter:

i've been kind of feeling lost lately. i am looking forward to moving and getting on with things and getting a job and finding some meaning in my life...
there's not a whole lot going on of late and i feel rather aimless and depressed.

i've come around to the idea of living in san francisco. mostly.

i have a deep desire to get the move over already, and this has been exacerbated by the news of at least two recent robberies and hold-ups in front or in our building in the past week. local residents have nicknamed our neighborhood the "ghetto ATM" (lots of rich college-age kids living here, on the edge of the projects are ripe for the picking (off) by locals in "need"). this rash of recent robberies isn't helped by the fact that our stupid neighbors in the building prop the locked security doors open on every floor, as well as the front door(s). thanks for putting us all at risk, ya dipsh*ts.

add to that all the trash and crap in the hallways and on the streets near our place, and crappy graffiti everywhere in the building and on it (see the bit about leaving those doors open, above), and yeah, i'm increasingly looking forward to leaving...

*sigh* i have to say, it's not NYC, really, it's just my goddamn neighborhood/building. bushwick is getting better but it's got a LONG way to go. if we weren't moving to SF, we'd definitely be looking elsewhere in the city. the living in bushwick is wearing me down...

-FINALLY working on my sloper. yes, yes, i've been saying that for a dog's age. today i'll finally DO it.

my plans for the rest of the week:

-sign up for that sweater design class at downtown yarns i want to take, and pick up more addi turbos. mmm, addi turbos. the best knitting needles ever.

-continue frogging some thrifted sweaters i picked up last week. recycled yarn! one's cotton and the other is cotton/linen, both are white-ish. i want to knit new sweaters from them and then hand-dye, maybe even tie-dye(!!!) them. i have idea-rs brewing. this is the first time i've ever done this yarn recycling, and i quite like it.

-knit more on the damn sweater dress.

-do more drawing...work out ideas for sweaters, and some dresses and skirts and blouses for myself.

-perhaps work on my fashion scrapbook. i have a clippings pile that is a mile-high and needs attention. perhaps i'll scan some of my favorites to show you.

i'm feel/look like i was run over by a mac-truck today. why? nothing more than the simple act of knitting 4000 stitches in one day. i ache all over. i've put a moratorium on knitting for the day in order not to kill myself, though i would like to do nothing more than knit incessantly. i'm working on this green wool sweaterdress thing: the top has puff sleeves, then a v-neck, cinched-in ribbed empire waist, and then it's full and insane from there down. a little baby-doll thing, that started out like the boobholder but has turned into something else entirely, at least from the waistline down. i want to finish it!!! *throws aching self down on the ground* i'm actually a rather impatient knitter/crocheter/machine knitter. i want to see it DONE so i stitch maniacally for hours on end and nearly kill myself. *chokes down advil like a fiend*

god damn, i need a job, if for no other reason beside the fact that it would get me out of the house. i was looking around for possible work ideas on the SF craig's list last night and found pretty much nothing appealing/relevant to my background. *sigh* how fabulous.

in lieu of knitting today, i'll probably go to the salvation army in the w. 50s. in a bit, after i find something to eat. i'm having one of those days where nothing seems palatable except chocolate chip cookies.

mmm, mike skinner.

the streets were AMAZING. i went by myself, and met up with ilovepolaroids at the venue. we drank beer (thanks (again) for the second one, melissa!) and danced our legs off. it was one of the best shows i've seen in ages. everybody was jumping around and dancing so much that the floor was shaking! i'm a taken woman, but damn, i would hump mike skinner in a new york minute (petey knows this, hah!). i walked back to the train in the pouring rain around midnight, and waited for the train for ages at 3rd ave. found out they are running the L trains on one track between 12-5am this week, so i jumped on one going toward 8th ave. just to be able to sit down. sat at 8th ave. for a dog's age, and then finally the train made it's way back to brooklyn. got home safe and sound, 1.5 hours later. put myself to bed at 2am. good times.

a simple top down raglan i made this spring (march? april?). just added some vintage buttons this week.

i started this with a random skein of lamb's pride given to me by my friend lindaquelinda (of adorn magazine fame), and ran out, and needed more yarn. too bad the new skein was a different dye lot. whoops! no matter...i'll probably just wear as is or try to dye it, perhaps, at a later date.

also, next time i do a top down raglan like this, i will use a smaller gauge needle on the ribbing, to make said ribbing much tighter.

the collar of glampyre's angelica, open. it sort of makes for a neat covertable collar look when open. i nixed the keyhole edging that was in the pattern because mine looked wonky, so i did a row of single crochet all around instead.

first version of the vogue dress i was yapping about the other day:

made with african fabric i unearthed at the salvation army, e. 23rd street, manhattan, earlier this spring. all seams are hong-kong finished, with yellow-orange dupioni silk bias tape that i cut myself. the best bias tape is the kind you make yourself...that crap that comes in a pack from the fabric store is doo-doo-poop. see? the inside of a garment can be as beautiful as the outside. all it takes is patience and care and an attention to detail.

pete's in dublin, ireland for the week, for apachecon europe, a software conference. he's to give a talk on wednesday, and the rest of the week, i suppose he'll be hacking away and chatting with like-minded geeks who have the skills to pay the bills, all the while utilizing open-source software, just because. i'm proud of him and i hope he gives a good talk and drinks lots of good beer.

so the cat's away, but i'm not playing! at least not today.

i cleaned the bathroom, swept, vacuumed, did the dishes, made the bed.

i figure i'll do the following this week:

-work on my re-make/re-style/alterations pile
-knit, knit, knit. i'm in the middle of a great green sweater at the moment, and nearly finished with several other sweaters and other knitables.
-cut out and maybe start on the dress for julie's wedding (which is in mid-august, so i have a lot of time!)
-go through my crap some, get rid of more stuff in preparation for the move to SF
-do a tiny bit of thrifting for fun (i want to find a pair of black jeans, and make them skinny if need be) and just look around and get out of the house/get fresh air
-go see "the streets" tomorrow! yay. (for some reason, i thought it was wednesday, but no matter...) anyone in NYC planning on going?

i have a family wedding to attend later this summer (my sister in law, julie, is getting married), and naturally, i've been thinking about wedding attire and accouterments (anything is an excuse to ponder clothes and shoes in my world, as ye know well)...

i've decided i'm going to make my dress, with some bits of this or that around my house to save some money (we're moving, of course), and instead will purchase some cool shoes to go with it that i will have some chance in hell of wearing again.

the dress is actually this one, from vogue patterns:

yes, yes, i could draft the pattern myself, quite easily. but, i figured, "why reinvent the wheel?". i made a muslin version last night and it fits perfectly because it's got a lot of ease around the bust. yay! i'm actually planning on making this dress is a few different fabrics as well...i've already cut it out in a lovely, loud african printed fabric i thrifted months ago, that features black, turquoise, red, and yellow-orange as it's colorway. i'll probably make yet another, who knows.

my version for the wedding will be made of a beautiful, intense red-orange linen i already have in my stash, and will have some hand-dyed vintage doilies applied to the front as pockets, and a doily split in half and attached to the shoulder area as a sleeve of sorts. i haven't decided what color i will dye the doilies yet, perhaps green, red, or yellow. i'm planning on heading into the city tomorrow to explore my options. the dress is simple, but i am intending on sewing it as nicely as possible, with hong-kong/bias tape finished seams in a contrasting/coordinating fabric (likely a dupioni silk), etc., essentially, as close to couture sewing techniques as i can muster so it's a high-quality, long-lasting, wearable dress, wearable far beyond this wedding thing.

my little creation grows by the day.
like a mother welling up with pride for her child, i am amazed and pleased with what wardrobe_remix has become. from the beginning, i saw it as a way to show off creative, risk-taking street style and street fashion, but in a do-it-yourself, democratic, community-type of manner. it took off, much to my delight and surprise.
